What Credit Score Do You Actually Need for a VA Loan in 2026?

If you served, you earned one of the most powerful home buying tools available anywhere in the country. But a lot of veterans in Hampton Roads talk themselves out of using it before they ever pick up the phone. One of the biggest reasons? They assume their credit score is too low.

Here is the truth.

The VA Does Not Set a Minimum Credit Score

The VA does not set a minimum credit score. Private lenders fund VA loans and set their own minimum score requirements through lender overlays. That is a critical distinction. The agency that backs your loan is not the one turning you down over a number. Individual lenders are making that call based on their own internal guidelines.

Half of all veterans are either unaware of the credit requirements for a VA loan or believe they need much higher credit scores than is typically necessary. That gap between perception and reality costs veterans real money and real opportunities every single year.

So What Do Lenders Actually Look For?

Most lenders require a score of at least 620. Some lenders may offer lower rates so it is worth shopping around. Besides credit score lenders also assess debt to income ratio credit history and recent financial stability with many aiming for a DTI ratio of 41% or lower.

Approval odds improve as credit history becomes cleaner and more established. A clean last 12 months and strong residual income can make the difference.

That last point matters more than most people realize. The VA places heavy emphasis on what is called residual income which is the money you have left over each month after all your major expenses are paid. Unlike other loan types the VA's emphasis on this factor helps ensure long term financial stability and often offsets a lower credit score or higher debt to income ratio.

In other words a lower credit score does not automatically disqualify you. Your full financial picture is what the underwriter is evaluating.

How VA Loans Compare to Conventional Loans

VA loans allow veterans to qualify with lower credit scores than conventional loans do thanks to the VA's loan guarantee which encourages lenders to offer favorable terms to veterans.

A conventional loan typically requires a 620 or higher just to get started and that is before you factor in down payment requirements or private mortgage insurance. VA loans do not require a down payment or mortgage insurance. That combination of flexible credit standards and zero down is what makes this benefit so powerful for working families here in Hampton Roads.

What If Your Score Is Below 620?

You still have options. Some lenders who specialize in military financing offer VA loans for credit scores as low as 600. While a higher score may secure a lower interest rate a lower minimum helps more veterans achieve homeownership than traditional big banks.

Borrowers with lower credit scores could still get qualified in exchange for a higher interest rate or a larger down payment. And in some cases simply cleaning up the last 12 months of payment history can make a bigger difference than years of old credit events.

The biggest compensating factors are strong residual income lower DTI stable documented income clean recent payment history verified cash reserves and documented housing payments.

Do Not Count Yourself Out Before You Check

Your service already qualified you for this benefit. Your credit score is not the final word on whether you can use it.

If you are a veteran in Virginia Beach Norfolk Chesapeake or anywhere across Hampton Roads reach out before you assume the answer is no. The conversation costs you nothing. A missed opportunity costs you a lot more.
