Best Things to Do Near Alanton Virginia Beach: A Local's Guide

One of the things buyers discover quickly after moving to Alanton is that the lifestyle here extends well beyond the neighborhood itself. The location in the Great Neck Corridor puts you within minutes of some of the best outdoor recreation, dining, shopping, and community experiences in all of Hampton Roads. This is not a generic list pulled from a tourism website. This is what life actually looks like when you live in Alanton.

Get on the Water

The water is the centerpiece of life near Alanton, and the options go well beyond simply looking at it from your backyard.

Broad Bay is minutes from the neighborhood and is one of the best recreational boating areas in Virginia Beach. Wakeboarding, tubing, water skiing, and fishing for puppy drum and speckled trout are all legitimate day on the water options. The bay is wide, open, and far less congested than the oceanfront. On a calm summer morning it feels like it belongs entirely to whoever is out there.

Linkhorn Bay to the south offers calmer, more protected water that is ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. The views across the bay toward First Landing State Park are genuinely difficult to beat.

The Narrows, located at the end of 64th Street inside First Landing State Park, is a favorite destination for boaters who want to beach the boat and spend an afternoon in the sun. With deep water right up to the sand, you can pull up, step off, and feel like you have found a hidden beach that most people in Virginia Beach do not know exists.

For those who want to get further out on the water, Broad Bay connects through the Lynnhaven River system to the Chesapeake Bay, putting serious offshore fishing and extended cruising within reach of a day trip.

First Landing State Park

First Landing State Park is Virginia's most visited state park and is just minutes from Alanton by car, with its southern Narrows boat launch on 64th Street accessible directly by water across Broad Bay. The park covers more than 2,800 acres of bald cypress swamps, maritime forests, and tidal marshes, with over 19 miles of trails winding through terrain that feels genuinely wild despite being in the middle of one of Virginia's largest cities.

The Cape Henry Trail runs 5.9 miles through the park and is open to both hikers and cyclists. The park also has a campground, cabin rentals, and kayak rentals on in-season weekends. For Alanton residents the park is a genuine nature resource minutes from the front door.

The Alanton Baycliff Recreation Center

The Alanton Baycliff Recreation Center has been the social hub of the community for over 50 years. Nestled in 20 wooded acres of pristine wetlands, the center features a 25 meter lap pool, a waterslide, a kids pool, and a picnic area. Membership is required to use the facility.

Summer at the pool is a genuine community experience. For new residents, the pool is often the first place they meet their neighbors in any meaningful way. The swim lessons draw families from throughout the neighborhood and the surrounding Great Neck community.

Lynnhaven Park

Lynnhaven Park sits just outside Alanton in the Great Neck Corridor and adds 15 acres of recreational space. The park features 12 lighted tennis courts, two basketball courts, open playing fields, ball fields, a playground, and public restrooms. It is one of the best public tennis facilities in Virginia Beach and is well used by residents throughout the corridor year round.

Great Neck Park and Recreation Center

Great Neck Park at 2513 Shorehaven Drive is a 70 acre wooded park along the banks of Lynnhaven Bay. The park features walking paths through towering pines, a gazebo overlooking the bay, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, picnic shelters, a playground, and a covered indoor pavilion that is a popular venue for community events and weddings.

The Great Neck Recreation Center sits directly adjacent to the park at 2521 Shorehaven Drive and is one of the best public recreation facilities in Virginia Beach. The 83,931 square foot facility includes an indoor pool with lap lanes and a diving board, racquetball courts, a weight room, cardio equipment, and a full schedule of group fitness classes. For Alanton residents who want year round indoor fitness options, this facility is a significant quality of life asset.

The Hilltop District

The Hilltop district on First Colonial Road is approximately 5 minutes from Alanton and functions as the neighborhood's everyday hub. Grocery, dining, retail, medical offices, coffee shops, and service providers are all concentrated here without the congestion of the resort corridor. It is close enough to be effortless and far enough from tourist traffic to feel like it belongs to the people who actually live here.

Virginia Beach Oceanfront

The oceanfront is approximately 15 minutes from Alanton. Close enough to visit on a whim, far enough that you are not living in the middle of it. That distance is actually one of the reasons Alanton buyers love the location so much. You have full access to miles of Atlantic Ocean beach, the boardwalk, the restaurants, and the summer energy of Virginia Beach's resort strip without it being your front yard.

Community Events in Alanton

The Alanton Civic League organizes events throughout the year that are woven into the rhythm of neighborhood life. The 4th of July parade is a neighborhood institution, complete with decorated bikes, fire trucks, and broad community participation. The spring Easter egg hunt draws families from throughout the neighborhood. The Great Neck Area Triathlon is another community anchor event that brings the broader Great Neck corridor together each year.

These events are not incidental. They are part of what makes Alanton a neighborhood rather than simply an address.

Is the Alanton Lifestyle Right for You?

The best way to understand what life near Alanton actually feels like is to spend a morning here before you make any decisions. Walk the streets, drop a kayak in the water, drive to First Landing State Park, stop at Hilltop, and watch how the neighborhood operates on an ordinary day.
