Sail250 Virginia: Chic's Beach Has the Best Seat in the House

June 01, 20265 min read

If you live in Chic's Beach, you already know the Chesapeake Bay delivers moments that the rest of Virginia Beach cannot match. Dolphins off the beach. Sunsets over the water. The kind of front row seat to the bay that most people drive an hour to experience. On June 19, 2026, that front row seat becomes something no one living anywhere else in Hampton Roads will be able to replicate.

The Sail250 Virginia Parade of Sail launches directly from the Lynnhaven Anchorage, right off Shore Drive, right outside your neighborhood. This is not a distant event you will watch on a screen or drive downtown to catch. It starts here.

What Is Sail250 Virginia?

Sail250 Virginia is the Commonwealth's official commemoration of America's 250th birthday. It is one of five official national partner ports for the Semiquincentennial of the United States, alongside New Orleans, Baltimore, New York, and Boston. More than 60 tall ships and military vessels representing approximately 20 countries will gather in Hampton Roads for a 12 day international maritime festival running June 12 through June 23, 2026. Over 4,000 officers, cadets, and crew members from around the world are part of the fleet. This is the largest maritime gathering in Virginia since OpSail 2000 and it is happening right off the shores of Chic's Beach.

The Gathering: June 16 Through June 18

The fleet begins assembling in the Lynnhaven Anchorage off Shore Drive starting Tuesday, June 16. By 2pm on Thursday, June 18, the entire fleet will be assembled. This is the only time spectators on land and water can view all the ships together at one time and in one place.

For residents of Chic's Beach, Baylake Beach, Baylake Pines, Ocean Park, and Cape Story by the Sea, this means three full days of over 60 tall ships anchored in the Chesapeake Bay directly off your neighborhood beach. Walk to the end of your street. Grab your coffee and a chair. The greatest peacetime gathering of tall ships in a generation will be sitting right there on the water.

The Parade of Sail: June 19

Friday, June 19 is the main event. The Sail250 Virginia Parade of Sail is a 26 nautical mile parade starting in the Lynnhaven Roads anchorage off the Lesner Bridge in Virginia Beach. The first ship will depart from the anchorage at 7am on Friday, June 19, 2026. From the anchorage, the ships will proceed west through Thimble Shoals Channel, through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, past Old Point Comfort, through Hampton Roads, and up the Elizabeth River.

Here is the verified schedule from the Chesapeake Beach Civic League notification:

7:00am: Colors hoisted. Fleet on standby. 7:30am: Ships underway west from Lynnhaven Anchorage. 8:35am: First ship passes over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. 10:15am: Last ship passes over the CBBT. Noon: First ship arrives at Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk.

The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform a flyover during the Parade of Sail. Confirmation of the exact flyover time will be announced closer to the event. Check sail250virginia.com for updates.

Why Chic's Beach Is the Best Viewing Location in Hampton Roads

The Parade of Sail has 15 public viewing sites along its 26 nautical mile route from Virginia Beach to downtown Norfolk. Most of those sites require you to drive somewhere, find parking, fight crowds, and hope you got there early enough. Chic's Beach residents do not have that problem.

The Lynnhaven Anchorage sits east of the Lesner Bridge, directly off the Chesapeake Bay beaches of Baylake Beach and the broader Chic's Beach corridor. The fleet gathers there. The parade launches from there. Residents on the water side of Shore Drive will be watching 60 plus tall ships weigh anchor and begin their procession from their neighborhood beach, their backyard, or their private dock.

The Escort Fleet, which is the civilian boater convoy accompanying the parade, reached capacity registration due to overwhelming response from the boating community. If you have a boat slipped at Marina Shores or Long Shore Marina, and you registered in time, you may be part of one of the most memorable maritime processions in American history.

For everyone else, the beach is the place to be. Get there early. Bring a chair and binoculars. The ships begin moving at 7:30am and the last one clears the anchorage around 10:15am. That is nearly three hours of tall ships passing directly off Chic's Beach.

This Is a Once in a Generation Moment

OpSail events in Hampton Roads have happened roughly every 25 years. The last time anything comparable came through Virginia was OpSail 2000. Before that, 1976. Most people who watch the Sail250 Virginia Parade of Sail from Chic's Beach on June 19 will never see anything like it again in their lifetime.

If you have been thinking about what it means to live in a neighborhood with genuine Chesapeake Bay access, this is the answer. You do not drive to the water for moments like this. You walk to it.
